NEW INFORMATION ON HIGH SIERRA CLIMBS -- See diary and photos -- CLC

"2001 Climb for Clean Air" has been a fund raising success for the American Lung Association of Washington! We raised over $370,000 to help kids (and adults) stop smoking smoking, fund research on lung disease, clean up the air, and sponsor summer camp for kids with asthma. 52 or our 96 climbers made it to the top of Mount Rainier. My team of 24 climbers ran into a summer snow storm with winds over 50 MPH (gusts reported up to 70 MPH) at Camp Muir. By the time the wind had died down a bit, there was over 12 inches of new snow on the glacier. We set out but were unable to find a safe route over the glaciers. We had to turn back but as Lou Whittaker said later "You are not really a mountaineer until you have had to turn back from the summit." We all made it back down safely and it was quite an adventure. Also our climbing team raised the most money ever for a 24 person team -- over $97K. My thanks and that of the ALAW to everyone who has contributed to the "2001 Climb for Clean Air" and sponsored me on one terrific challenge. Please see my diary for more details on the climb and some new pictures.
